Welcome to the Real World

Welcome to the Real World

Pontotoc County Extension Service hosted the "Welcome to the Real World" reality fair for students at the Pontotoc Ridge Career & Technology Center. Each student is given a scenario indicating their occupation, salary, and family situation. Then they take their monthly income and make basic living purchases by visiting each of the booths. At each booth they are to deduct the amount they choose from their monthly income. Here are the names of the booths they visit:
  • Groceries
  • Taxes-monthly withholding
  • Housing - purchase or rent
  • Transportation - type of car they might drive
  • Child Care
  • Communication (cell phone options)
  • Clothing - low or high cost plan
  • Personal Care - haircut, toiletries, etc.
  • Entertainment - cable, fast food, game tickets, movies, restaurants, etc
  • Supplemental Income - national guard, yard work, babysitting, house cleaning, etc.
It is an excellent way for students to see what happens to your paycheck in the "real world".
